Backward compatibility

Term used to describe a software program or hardware device that is compatible with previous versions of software or operating systems. The Intel 80286 was the first computer processor to be backwards compatible with previous processors. Without backwards compatibility, a program that works with one computer processor or operating system would stop working with the new version.
